Description bijianing 2008-05-21 13:55:04 UTC
I tried many times to compile the kernel by following the manual "http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml" and in myself ways, it is still not working.
first, this is my lspci:
ggjd ~ # lspci
00:00.0 Host bridge: ATI Technologies Inc RS300 Host Bridge (rev 02)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon 9100 IGP AGP Bridge

00:14.0 SMBus: ATI Technologies Inc SMBus (rev 1a)
00:14.1 IDE interface: ATI Technologies Inc Dual Channel Bus Master PCI IDE Controller
00:14.3 ISA bridge: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 434c
00:14.4 PCI bridge: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device 4342
00:14.5 Multimedia audio controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP150 AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)
00:14.6 Modem: ATI Technologies Inc IXP AC'97 Modem (rev 01)
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]
02:02.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5006X 802.11abg NIC (rev 01)
02:03.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)
02:04.0 CardBus bridge: Ricoh Co Ltd RL5c476 II (rev b1)
02:04.1 CardBus bridge: Ricoh Co Ltd RL5c476 II (rev b1)
02:04.2 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Ricoh Co Ltd R5C552 IEEE 1394 Controller (rev 06)

02:04.5 System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd xD-Picture Card Controller (rev 01)
02:05.0 Multimedia video controller: NEC Corporation Dual Tuner/MPEG Encoder (rev 0b)

the next, I compile kernel with the configuration:
Device Drivers  --->
   Sound  --->
<M> Sound card support
Open Sound System   --->
   < > Open Sound System (is unchecked)

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture  --->
   <M> Advanced Linux Sound Architecture
   <M> Sequencer support
   <M>     Sequencer dummy clien
   <M> OSS Mixer API
   <M> OSS PCM (digital audio) API
   [*] OSS PCM (digital audio) API - Include plugin system
      PCI devices  --->
        <M> ATI IXP AC97 Controller
        <M> ATI IXP Modem
after complied i reboot, then
execute "emerge alsa-utils",
and execute "alsaconf"
and alsaconf said :
===============================================================================

 Now ALSA is ready to use.
 For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.

 Have a lot of fun!

it seems to be all right, then i execute following commands:
rc-update add alsasound boot
/etc/init.d/alsasound start  (display: "already started")
alsamixer (I unmuted all channel, tune the volume, and it looks all right.)

now i think it should be right, but it only looks all right, i can't hear anything, when i play mp3 with mplayer or other players.

and here is my lsmod:

ggjd ~ # lsmod

You appear to have USE="alsa esd oss". What sound system do you use, then? What if you tested with mplayer, something like this perhaps:

# mplayer -ao alsa

I am sorry that i am in japan now, because of the time differences, it is 13 , and I am working in company. so i will provide the detail information when a go home, and now i will provide more information to my best ability.

1. USE="alsa esd oss".
   the use flags, are there some strange? the use flags is set by gentoo's "desktop" profile, should i delete the "esd" and "oss"?

2. my "sound system" means sound card? the driver? or something?
   my sound card is already listed by lspci before.

   my driver is the kernel's alsa modules, something looks wrong perhaps because I have emerged the alsa-driver package, should I unemerge alsa-driver. I now install alsa-driver because I tried all ways I can thought of. so sorry to can not provide primitive information..

3. # mplayer -ao alsa
   I did not use this comand, but i tried kde's music player. the result is the same. I will try the command when I go home.

Comment 5 bijianing 2008-05-22 12:10:12 UTC
I tried the command: mplayer -ao alsa 1.mp3
I can not hear anything....
Comment 6 Karsten Kuehne 2008-05-22 13:28:27 UTC
So you emerged the alsa driver package and enabled alsa in the kernel?
It only works one way or the other but not both.
Also remove OSS from your use flags, as you want to use the alsa sound system?
Comment 7 bijianing 2008-05-23 10:45:03 UTC
I emerge --unmerge alsa-driver, but I cant hear anything..
Comment 8 Jeroen Roovers (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-05-25 16:29:47 UTC
Sorry. After days of probing and checking, no bug has emerged. I put it down to a software configuration error or perhaps a hardware error. If it really is sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r8 that is at fault, you should be able to at least track down which earlier or later versions of gentoo-sources do not exhibit the alleged bug. When you do, please reopen this bug.
