Description Hopeless 2008-05-20 17:09:42 UTC
Since I've upgraded to 2.6.24, I haven't been able to use net-misc/arpstar without a fatal kernel panic.

I first encountered this on a hardened amd64 system (and arpstar has been working for me for years on this system, even though only being keyworded x86...),
but I've recently been able to test on a vanilla 32-bit x86 gentoo install, with the exact same result.

Here is a picture of the panic with the hardened amd64 kernel, the x86 message appears to be the same;

The module loads just fine, but as soon as you initiate any network traffic (with ping, for example) the machine panics.

I've tried it with all three hardened-sources 2.6.24 kernels, and gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r8 on x86.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.boot 2.6.24 kernel
2.modprobe arpstar
3.ping -c2 www.gentoo.org

My symptoms on (hardened/x86/2.6, gcc-3.4.6, glibc-2.6.1-r0, 2.6.24-hardened-r3 i686) began the instant I manually loaded the module; I got no printouts, the box simply froze solid.

Has anyone tried arpstar on 2.6.25.x ? (I'd eventually like to go beyond 2.6.23 and try the XTS encryption option with truecrypt, but use my laptop at uncivilized hotspots a lot and really like having arpstar!! :-) )

Well, it seems that Gentoo Bugzilla has gone dumb; at least on this bug. Not even an acknowledgment that we or the report exists.

FWIW, Hopeless, I'm guessing that Arpstar is dead. I'm guessing that everyone but a few of us were aware that it has been replaced by arpon:

http://arpon.sourceforge.net/

Arpon seems to be a well-designed tool; my laptop will certainly use it at hotpots, given Gentoo Arpstar is no longer.
