Description Chris Case 2003-06-04 23:58:52 UTC
Currently, when you read the gentoo guide on printing, if you are only
interested in Network printing, you skip directly to section 3. Though is
misleading because it is necessary to read section 1 on setting up local
printers in order to get it to work correctly. It makes it annoying when it
constantly refers to steps that occured in section 1; to have to skip up and
read all that then go back down. Unknowningly which steps of section 1 must be
performed for section 3 to work. For example: you need to install cups foomatic
and all that.

What I propose is that the docs streamline local and printing over smb as part
of the same section. This seems like a more cohesive way to create the docs,
without creating duplicated text. I think while it will add very little
complexity to installing a local printer. However, it will make installing a
printer over a smb share much easier.

I ended up reading the docs, trying a few things and it didn't work. I resorted
to finding a different mine-minei-howto and installed ppd files etc., that also
didn't work. I finally came back to the gentoo docs, recompiled everything i
had (cups, foomatic and samba) since when i compiled them the first time i had
-cups as on of my USE flags. Made sure everything was running and it finally
worked. Overall took me a little over an hour for me to get it going.

The statement i was running into errors was with the foomatic-configure line. I
don't have the exact output, but it gave me something to the effect of
connection refused. I didn't know where to look for errors or what. I think it
was caused by cupsd not running. But i'm still not sure. It would be nice as
well to include some common errors that people run into within a reasonable range.

I considering myself an intermediate Linux user and a beginner at printing under
linux through smb shares.

Thanks.

Created attachment 16649 [details]

i also rewrote the applications section (openoffice now supports cups
natively), tried to fix bug #20619 and did some small fixes, please anyone can
review it?
