Description Heitor Omar Passos 2008-05-14 18:20:31 UTC
Openoffice 2.3 loops and window doesn't refresh, killing process being the only way out, whenever opening any one file or trying to quit after saving a new one.
The only error I've got with strace is this:

(process:9449): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2248: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:9449): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed

(process:9449): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_new: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_OBJECT (object_type)' failed

If I'm working inside Gnome, this doesn't happen.
If I am outside gnome (fluxbox here) but start with OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome, it works fine, but then another bug arrives, which is the menus opening in the corner of the screen instead of their places. I don't know if this other bug is related, because I have never forced desktop before.
Another probably not related issue is my gtk+ apps using UTF-8 by default and not even G_FILENAME_ENCONDING=@locale being able to surpass this. I read there was solution to this last one, but couldn't apply it, so for now, due to these two maybe-non-related issues, I'm not willing to force using Gnome (although it looks much better).

Reading around the web I found this is not a new bug, but it seems to have reappered now. Arch people confirms this, as it seems:
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/10035
I understand also that starting with another user (have tried superuser) doesn't trigger this bug (but triggers both the menu and the encoding issues).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. It seems it is AMD64 related, but can't confirm, and don't think it is version related, because it was going well with Openoffice-2.3 and started to happen all of a sudden. I've not been able to emerge 2.4 to see if it's gone then.
2. Open any one file; or
3. Save a new one (even blank) and try to close it.
Actual Results:
Openoffice seems to loop, consuming the whole CPU after a bunch of minutes, and strace shows these errors, one after another:

(process:9449): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2248: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:9449): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed

(process:9449): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_new: assertion `G_TYPE_IS_OBJECT (object_type)' failed

Killing the process is the only way to get rid of the non-refreshing window.

Expected Results:
I guess Openoffice should be OK working inside any environment or window manager I throw it into.

The only things I can think of that might be of interest, any other demanded information I'd be glad to give:

1. compiled with gtk kde firefox USE flags

2. I have two other issues regarding gnome, maybe, maybe not, related to this one:
all my gtk+ apps ignore my locale settings, even with G_FILENAME ENCODING=iso8859-1 set, when it comes to filenames, and always default to UTF-8
all my gtk+ apps working outside gnome (without gnome-settings-daemon running, that is) require three clicks, instead of two, to open their file in the opening dialogs, or in the main window, for Nautilus. If I launch gnome-settings-daemon, then I can go with just two clicks. By the way, openoffice doesn't get any better with gnome-settings-daemon running.

[edit]
I've just taken another look around the web but no help. Just to mention these proposed fixes that didn't work for me:

Deleted my .ooo-2.0 folder # have forgotten to mention this; didn't work;

G_SLICE=always-malloc # from http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=194106 (a bug that didn't show up in the bugzilla search, strange) -- but I guess this would be for openoffice-bin, not my case;

OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde # from http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=82078 and gentoo bugzilla #194106 again -- as expected, since the problem is outside gnome, not the other way around. It doesn't look to be gtk-theme related too, I've tried even Default and that's OK.

There seems to be a whole lot a bunch of bugs like this, being the common aproach modifying OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=something_that_works, but I guess this would still be a bug, and as stated before, this rises two other bugs that I don't know how to address (except by using the OpenOffice dialog for the filename encoding issue, which leaves us with the annoying menu on the corner issue).

Hope you devs/bug-wranglers can throw a light on this soon, I just don't know where else to look into.

Please post your emerge --info too, please.

By the way, I've tried one more thing: downgrading gtk+ to 2.10.14, and upgrading to unstable 2.12.9-r2.
Neither one worked: 2.12.9-r2 goes the same way as my today's version (2.12.8), but 2.10.14 presented a rather different behaviour: instead of immediatly freezing, it managed to actually open a file, but crashed anyway when closing it, even without touching it. Strace gave me this different result, this time:

(process:19245): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2248: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:19245): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed

(process:19245): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_recent_manager_get_for_screen: assertion `GDK_IS_SCREEN (screen)' failed

(process:19245): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2248: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function

(process:19245): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed

(process:19245): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_recent_manager_add_item: assertion `GTK_IS_RECENT_MANAGER (manager)' failed

I wish I knew where else to look at to help with this one, but I'm no expert you see.
Comment 4 Andreas Proschofsky (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-05-29 12:43:34 UTC
Did you actually try with OpenOffice 2.4.0? Cause 2.3.0 isn't even in the tree anymore (for quite some time)
Comment 5 Heitor Omar Passos 2008-05-29 13:47:19 UTC
No, I haven't. I tried to emerge 2.4, but coudn't, and am aware that there are a lot of bugs preventing one from emerging it in several cases. I couldn't find out which is mine but couldn't emerge it nevertheless.
Plus, this bug (http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/10035) shows the same behavior in 2.4, so I don't have reasons to believe that emerging 2.4 (even if I could) would solve the problem.

On the other hand, there came up a workaround for this other bug: (http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=208766), which I mentioned earlier, so for now I'm using OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=gnome with no problems, which I refer to anyone who might have this bug too.

While none of this solves anything, it is a comfortable workaround and I would agree to leave this bug as WON'T FIX, and wait paciently for OpenOffice 3.0 (which I hope I will be able to emerge), so nobody has to frag his brains out for something that now looks just a minor problem.

Actually OOo 2.4 should emerge just fine on AMD64...

Besides that, you really should file such bugs upstream, not too much we can do here....
