Description Randall Wald 2008-05-09 20:45:08 UTC
OK, this is kind of convoluted, but hear me out: I upgraded to rxvt-unicode-9.02-r1 a couple of days ago, and started getting the following error when attempting to run calc (using zsh as my shell):

zsh: killed calc

Initially I thought this might be a conflict between zsh and calc; this seemed to be confirmed by running calc within an xterm executed from within urxvt, which also failed. However, after some additional experimentation, I've determined that urxvt is the problem. (In particular, switching to bash just changes the error to "Killed", but does not fix the problem.) Below, I've put a list of cases which work and which do not; unless otherwise specified, new terminals are launched using the x11-misc/gmrun program which is itself invoked from an xbindkeys shortcut.

Works:
xterm with default zsh shell
"xterm /bin/bash" (i.e., xterm with bash)

Does not work:
urxvt with default zsh shell
xterm (executed from within urxvt) with default zsh shell
urxvt (executed from within xterm) with default zsh shell
"xterm /bin/bash" (executed from within urxvt) with bash
SHELL=/bin/bash xterm (executed from within urxvt) with bash
urxvt (executed from within "xterm /bin/bash") with bash
SHELL=/bin/bash urxvt (executed from within xterm) with bash

So to summarize, calc does not work within urxvt, or within any terminal which is itself launched from urxvt. I have no idea what could be causing this problem, but maybe one of you does.

Oh, and because someone will complain if I don't post it:

zsh + sci-mathematics/calc-2.12.1.5 + x11-terms/rxvt-unicode-9.02-r1
works here.
Comment 2 Randall Wald 2008-05-10 08:09:54 UTC
I was using sci-mathematics/calc-2.11.10.1; however, upgrading to calc-2.12.1.5 didn't help. If there's some other way I can trace what's happening, I'd gladly try it.
Comment 3 René Nussbaumer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-21 18:30:27 UTC
Can you try this with 9.05? Does it still appear?
Comment 4 Randall Wald 2008-06-21 21:06:05 UTC
Yea, it looks like x11-terms/rxvt-unicode-9.05 fixes this. Not sure why, but I'll close the bug.
