consider the following:
http://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/alt/browser/trunk/prefix-overlay/dev-util/git
does not work, whereas
https://overlays.gentoo.org/proj/alt/browser/trunk/prefix-overlay/dev-util/git
does work.

The same for eclass/git.eclass, which screws up SVN checkouts of the prefix tree for users that cannot switch to svn protocol due to firewall issues.  See bug #206878

I suspect it's a too aggressive redirect thing.
