Its good to have example ip configurations (commented out) in the /etc/conf.d/net file, but just as many of us can skip over that whole chunk of network configuration during install, it would be great if the inital "net" file were just as well behaved.
I agree. I think that DHCP is more common (thanks to cable modems, DSL, and little home routers), and those who need static IPs can change it. I've been "bitten" by this a few times when doing etc-update. Seems like a more sensible default to me.
I agree as well - azarah handles baselayout (which is what owns /etc/conf.d/net), so I am forwarding it to him
we're moving to installing a blank net file since the example config is getting to be quite vast (and thus be a huge pita to merge changes)
