Description Pacho Ramos gentoo-dev 2008-04-22 19:15:25 UTC
When I merge seahorse-2.20.3 I get:

WARN: compile
QA: stop using the bindnow-flags function ... simply drop it from your ebuild

I have seen that also 2.22 ebuilds include:

src_compile() {
        append-ldflags $(bindnow-flags)
        gnome2_src_compile
}

Thanks

Until I'm told what it does and why this is suddendly deprecated I'm not changing it.

I don't know what does it :-(, but reading flag-o-matic.eclass:

# @FUNCTION: bindnow-flags
# @RETURN: Returns the flags to enable "now" binding in the current selected linker.
# @DESCRIPTION:
# DEPRECATED - Gets the flags needed for "NOW" binding
bindnow-flags() {
        ewarn "QA: stop using the bindnow-flags function ... simply drop it from your ebuild" >&2
...

Seems that this eclass is maintained by toolchain@gentoo.org then, hopefully, they will know more about this

@Toolchain, we need your help on that one...

Thanks
Comment 4 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2008-05-04 10:38:26 UTC
that's a pretty stupid position to take ... it's obviously been deprecated ... the only reason i havent outright deleted the function is so people can drop it from their ebuilds

i guess i'll drop it from the eclass and then you can leave it in if you like

the background on the function has been announced/discussed in other (relevant) circles

Comment 6 Gilles Dartiguelongue (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-15 12:26:31 UTC
thanks to diego, I've now seen the light. For others, the dynamic linker is now just smart enough to switch behavior as needed for setXid binaries hence the static linker flag is now useless.
