Description Oliver Schwabedissen 2008-04-22 05:21:48 UTC
OpenOffice 2.4.0 starts with a black splash screen and gives two error messages about two xlb-files

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start OpenOffice from the command line or from KDE

Actual Results:
OpenOffice 2.4.0 starts with a black splash screen and I get two errror messages:

Error loading BASIC of document
file:///opt/OpenOffice.org/share/basic/WebWizard/script.xlb/:
General error.
General I/O error.

and

Error loading BASIC of document
file:///opt/OpenOffice.org/share/basic/WebWizard/dialog.xlb/:
General error.
General I/O error.

Expected Results:
OpenOffice comes up with its normal splash screen and no error messages.

OOo 2.4.0 compiles fine as did all previous versions. I didn't have these problems with OOo < 2.4. I don't have a folder /opt/OpenOffice.org.

I installed OpenOffice-bin on my Gentoo notebook and it starts without problems, there's also no /opt/OpenOffice.org.

 # emerge -pv openoffice

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Forget to mention that I already tried to remove my profile folder (~/.ooo-2.0). This didn't help. The folder was recreated on next start but the problems remained.

I also reemerged OOo last night.
Comment 2 George Deligeorgis 2008-04-22 07:20:38 UTC
I see the similar behavior after re-emerging openoffice-2.4.0 yesterday.
Running any component of oofice will produce an error: javaldx failed!
and will start with a blank splash screen. Only the progress bar is visible.
Note:
openoffice-2.4.0 was emerged before (Early April) and behaved correctly.
Comment 3 Geoffrey Clements 2008-04-22 07:53:11 UTC
I also have this.
Comment 4 George Deligeorgis 2008-04-22 07:54:34 UTC
Please ignore the error message described in my previous post (javaldx failed) it is because of bug 215163.
The blank splash screen remains but without any errors on console when invoking any oo component.

Is this with or without branding use flag set?

Still there has to be some old user install dir around in your home-dir, /opt/OpenOffice.org is a path we used ages ago (in 1.x-times) as an install-dir.

Also see bug #215347 about this
Comment 7 George Deligeorgis 2008-04-22 08:14:32 UTC
No, branding is turned off

output of emerge -pv openoffice:

[ebuild R ] app-office/openoffice-2.4.0 USE="binfilter cups dbus eds firefox gnome gstreamer gtk java ldap pam -branding -debug -kde -mono -odk -seamonkey -webdav -xulrunner" LINGUAS="el en en_GB en_US -af -ar -as_IN -be_BY -bg -bn -br -bs -ca -cs -cy -da -de -dz -en_ZA -eo -es -et -fa -fi -fr -ga -gl -gu_IN -he -hi_IN -hr -hu -it -ja -km -ko -ku -lt -lv -mk -ml_IN -mr_IN -nb -ne -nl -nn -nr -ns -or_IN -pa_IN -pl -pt -pt_BR -ru -rw -sh -sk -sl -sr -ss -st -sv -sw_TZ -ta_IN -te_IN -tg -th -ti_ER -tn -tr -ts -uk -ur_IN -ve -vi -xh -zh_CN -zh_TW -zu" 0 kB

i see no /opt errors. This was mentioned by the original poster.
Comment 8 Carsten Böcker 2008-04-22 08:29:59 UTC
Same Problem here. After removing ~/ooo-2.0 and ~/.openoffice there ist no error-message but splash screen is still black
Comment 9 Andreas Proschofsky (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-22 08:46:26 UTC
Looks like the non-Gentoo-branded splash still does not work for some, strange, did work fine here when I tested it. Emerging with the "branding" use-flag set should solve this.

Could someone please test this?
Comment 10 George Deligeorgis 2008-04-22 08:55:43 UTC
Start re-emerge with branding turned on.
Will get back to you in *many* hours! :-)

Although this is a work around if I understand correctly.
Meaning the non-gentoo splash screen should be there as well.
Anyway I'll post again when done.
Comment 11 George Deligeorgis 2008-04-22 10:57:57 UTC
I can confirm that enabling the "branding" use flag, the splash screen is now working properly.

The only strange thing going on is:
typesconfig[10178]: segfault at 0 rip 4010aa rsp 7fff10f804b0 error 4
typesconfig[10179]: segfault at 0 rip 40106c rsp 7fff10f804b0 error 6
in my dmesg.
searched my logs. It was there in the previous compile as well.(-branding)

probably this is off topic...

Ok thanks, going to force branding on everyone again to solve the problem

That's a known silent - but non-harmful - miscompile on some systems
Comment 13 Andreas Proschofsky (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-22 12:57:11 UTC
Gentoo splash screen is default again, so closing this bug
Comment 14 Jonathan Geisler 2008-04-22 19:18:54 UTC
I looked at the new ebuild and see how you point to the openintro_gentoo.bmp file for the branding. I compiled before this change was added to the ebuild and am also having the black splash screen. Short of recompiling, is there anything I can do to get the splash screen refer to this file?

Also, I can't seem to locate that file anywhere on my system.

You can use your own splash screen image by copying it into /usr/lib/openoffice/program/intro.bmp (resolution of the black screen is 440x286 pixels).
