Description Gordon Malm (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-21 19:25:33 UTC
Upgraded from sys-fs/udev-115-r1 to udev-119, no kernel update or other changes. Rebooted and now /dev/ttyS* devices are there but /dev/tts/* symlinks are no longer created.

sys-fs/udev-115-r1's /etc/udev/rules.d/50-udev.rules contained the lines:
KERNEL=="ttyS[0-9]*",   NAME="%k", SYMLINK="tts/%n", GROUP="uucp", MODE="0660"
KERNEL=="ttyUSB[0-9]*", NAME="%k", SYMLINK="tts/USB%n", GROUP="uucp", MODE="0660"

I can find nothing similar in sys-fs/udev-119.

I don't know if these symlinks were purposely removed or if this is a bug. I am under the impression udev was moving to the /dev/tts/* naming scheme and away from /dev/ttyS* so seems like a bug to me.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Comment 1 Christian Heim (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-21 19:40:20 UTC
The output of `emerge --info` would be nice.
Comment 2 Matthias Schwarzott gentoo-dev 2008-04-21 19:53:12 UTC
As we moved to the new ruleset that is shared between multiple distros there were changes to the rules, sure.

We could add these rules if really needed:
KERNEL=="ttyS[0-9]*", SYMLINK+="tts/%n"
KERNEL=="ttyUSB[0-9]*", SYMLINK+="tts/USB%n"

I was under the impression that /dev/tts/ was from the devfs naming scheme which is deprecated now,

Sorry about that. FWIW, this behavior is the same on all machines I've deployed udev-119 on, which all have differring roles/emerge --info. Here's one of them though:

You may be right, I am not positively sure myself so I wanted to bring in some more eyes/minds. I could swear I read somewhere that this was the direction udev was going.

If it is the case that /dev/tts/* symlinks were truly deprecated and udev upstream is purposely dropping them, I'd personally vote not to add them back.

So closing this issue as WONTFIX until someone proofes we DO need this.
