Description Voltron Rex 2003-05-28 17:00:30 UTC
Greetings

If I us setxkbmap or kxkb and select the us_intl keyboard my quotation mark keys
stop working. I can press the quote mark until my finger falls off; quotes
(double, single, backtick, tilde) just dont work. (doh, I would have had a quote
mark there in dont, but nope).

In XF86Config I've got:
Section "InputDevice"
  Driver "Keyboard"
  Identifier "Keyboard[0]"
  Option "MapName" "Standard Keyboard [ pc105 ]"
  Option "Protocol" "Standard"
  Option "XkbLayout" "us"
  Option "XkbModel" "pc105"
  Option "XkbRules" "xfree86"
EndSection

I counted the keys on the keyboard and came to 105, so I suppose that's right.
The keyboard on the back says "Cherry" but that looks like a brand more than
anything else. It's an US style keyboard purchased in Germany. It's got two
'windows' keys and this funky menu key.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. type setxkbmap us_intl
2. type "
3.

Actual Results:
nothing

Expected Results:
I should have seen "

Hi

Sorry, for some reason I didn't receive the question the first time. Here I was thinking my bug was lost in the void or somesuch.

anyway, version is xfree-4.3.0-r2

Additional information: At work I installed gentoo as well. The machine has a german keyboard. There's a similar problem: the ~ refuses to work, but all other keys work.

I have the same problem with the be layout. But the strange thing is that when i open a terminal and make cd tilde (sorry currently i can't type it) the tilde is not displayed but i go back to my home dir.

Hi Again,

Just checking up on this bug. It's rather important to me, as I can type neither umlauts nor punctuation when in German-keyboard mode. Do you have any suggestions for me to try?

either re-emerge -r2 or do the following please:

X11R6/lib/X11/locale/compose.dir ?
I mean you need to change the string
C/Compose: C
back to
iso8859-1/Compose: C

Hi

Thanks for the suggestion. First thing I notice about compose.dir is that the second half of the file is a repeat of the first--400 lines repeated, it looks like. I changed the first entry you said and restarted X; no change (tested only in Konsole): still no punctuation and no umlauts. Then I changed both.

Now the situation is a little funky when using English-with-deadkeys. I use the KDE keyboard switcher to switch to this mode. In Konsole or Konqueror, quotation marks work but deadkey isn

In Konsole or Konqueror, quotation marks work but deadkey isn´t happening. When in MozillaFirebird, typing this form right now, deadkeys do work, and I can get umlauts. When in scite (a gtk editor) quotation marks don´t work at all. AAAGH!

I´m willing to recompile X, but please don´t tell me I have to recompile gtk and kde!

About the compose.dir, should I change both entries or just the first one?
Comment 9 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-06-30 09:46:15 UTC
just the first one, please
Comment 10 Seemant Kulleen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2003-06-30 09:47:01 UTC
your other choice is to just re-emerge xfree-4.3.0-r2 as I have fixed it in the package itself a while ago. (or -r3 is you're that daring).
Comment 11 Voltron Rex 2003-07-14 02:06:46 UTC
Hi

I re-emerged xfree and everything appears to be OK. You can close this bug. I'll test around a bit more and if I have any more problems I'll let you know.

Thanks
Ben
