Build the latest lirc from CVS, you know you want to.

Please note that as a general rule "live" cvs ebuilds are no longer accepted into Portage. If cvs contains fixes or features not available in the newest release, it is preferable to create a snapshot tarball from a cvs checkout. For a repository of "live" cvs ebuilds, see breakmygentoo.net, but note that this site is unofficial and totally unsupported by Gentoo (eg, dont post bugs here if it breaks)
sorry, policy changed
As app-misc/lirc often breaks with new kernel versions and bugs last here unnecessarily long, I request reconsidering the introduction of app-misc/lirc live ebuild. Such an ebuild would especially be useful to live kernel version users.
Created attachment 248285 [details, diff] A patch to create a dirty live ebuild out of 0.8.7_pre1
media-tv, would you mind if I committed the live ebuild (keyword-masked) to the tree, and set myself as a maintainer for it (with restrict metadata.xml keyword)?
I would especially appreciate a 9999 build as for amd64 lirc 0.8.7 does not work currently with kernel >=2.6.36. Lirc website is offering a snapshot of their cvs up for grabs, I suggest a ebuild to be made for it. I may look into it myself and post the ebuild here in the next coming days.
Did it: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=345833 Not exactly a live ebuild but it's the latest.
Ok, we already agreed that media-tv doesn't want to put live ebuilds in the tree and nowadays neither do I. If anyone is interested in such a ebuild, one can be found in my devoverlay along with other live ebuilds of mine (layman -a mgorny).
