Both app-office/abiword-2.6.0 and app-office/abiword-2.6.2 always print out to paper formatting mark "^I" in light gray color if "Show Formatting Marks" option is turned on. I believe the intended behavior was just to show these marks on screen. ddc@ddclpc:~ $ eix abiword [I] app-office/abiword Available versions: (2) 2.4.6 (~)2.6.0 (~)2.6.2 {debug gnome spell xml} Installed versions: 2.6.2(2)(04:42:57 AM 04/12/2008)(spell xml -debug -gnome) Homepage: http://www.abisource.com/ Description: Fully featured yet light and fast cross platform word processor [I] app-office/abiword-plugins Available versions: 2.4.6 (~)2.6.0 (~)2.6.2 {bzip2 cxx debug gnome grammar jabber jpeg libgda math ots pdf readline svg thesaurus wmf wordperfect} Installed versions: 2.6.2(04:56:43 AM 04/12/2008)(cxx grammar jpeg math pdf readline svg thesaurus wmf -debug -gnome -jabber -libgda -ots -wordperfect) Homepage: http://www.abisource.com/ Description: Set of plugins for abiword Found 2 matches. ddc@ddclpc:~ $ emerge --info Portage 2.1.5_rc4 (default-linux/amd64/2007.0/no-multilib, gcc-4.2.3, glibc-2.7-r2, 2.6.25-gentoo x86_64) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.25-gentoo x86_64 AMD Turion(tm) 64 Mobile Technology MT-28 Timestamp of tree: Fri, 18 Apr 2008 13:30:08 +0000 app-shells/bash: 3.2_p33 dev-java/java-config: 1.3.7, 2.1.5 dev-lang/python: 2.5.1-r5 sys-apps/baselayout: 2.0.0 sys-apps/openrc: 0.2.2 sys-apps/sandbox: 1.2.18.1-r2 sys-devel/autoconf: 2.13, 2.62 sys-devel/automake: 1.5, 1.7.9-r1, 1.8.5-r3, 1.9.6-r2, 1.10.1 sys-devel/binutils: 2.18-r1 sys-devel/gcc-config: 1.4.0-r4 sys-devel/libtool: 1.5.26 virtual/os-headers: 2.6.24 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="amd64 ~amd64" CBUILD="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-O3 -march=k8 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/env.d /etc/env.d/java/ /etc/fonts/fonts.conf /etc/gconf /etc/gentoo-release /etc/revdep-rebuild /etc/terminfo /etc/texmf/web2c /etc/udev/rules.d" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -march=k8 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="distlocks metadata-transfer parallel-fetch sfperms unmerge-orphans userfetch userpriv" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.yandex.ru/gentoo-distfiles/ http://src.gentoo.pl/" LANG="en_US.utf8" LC_ALL="en_US.utf8" LDFLAGS="" LINGUAS="ru" MAKEOPTS="-j2" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_RSYNC_OPTS="--recursive --links --safe-links --perms --times --compress --force --whole-file --delete --stats --timeout=180 --exclude=/distfiles --exclude=/local --exclude=/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="3dnow 3dnowext X a52 aac acl acpi agg alsa amd64 async atm bash-completion bashlogger bzip2 cairo cddb cdio cdparanoia cli crypt cups cxx dbus dhcp doc dri dts dvd enca encode escreen examples expat extra-cardsets extras fam ffmpeg flac fontconfig gcj gif glep glibc-omitfp glitz gloox gmp gnutls gpm grammar gstreamer gtk hal iconv id3 idle imlib isdnlog ithreads java javascript jce jpeg jpeg2k lame lyrics mad mailwrapper math md5sum midi mmx mmxext mozdevelop moznopango mp2 mp3 mp4 mp4live mpeg mpeg2 mudflap musepack ncurses nls nptl nptlonly nsplugin offensive ogg opengl openmp pam paste64 pcre pcsc-lite pdf perlsuid pic player plugins png pnm ppds pppd python quicktime radio rar readline reflection restrict-javascript samba savedconfig scanner sdl session speex spell spl sqlite srt sse sse2 ssl svg symlink taglib tcl tcpd theora thesaurus threads threadsafe tiff tk truetype unicode usb utils vim-pager vim-syntax vim-with-x vorbis vram winbind wmf x264 xattr xcb xhtml xml xorg xpm xscreensaver xv xvid zlib" ALSA_CARDS="atiixp atiixp-modem" ALSA_PCM_PLUGINS="*" APACHE2_MODULES="actions alias auth_basic authn_alias authn_anon authn_dbm authn_default authn_file authz_dbm authz_default authz_groupfile authz_host authz_owner authz_user autoindex cache dav dav_fs dav_lock deflate dir disk_cache env expires ext_filter file_cache filter headers include info log_config logio mem_cache mime mime_magic negotiation rewrite setenvif speling status unique_id userdir usertrack vhost_alias" ELIBC="glibc" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse synaptics" KERNEL="linux" LCD_DEVICES="ncurses text" LINGUAS="ru" USERLAND="GNU" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" Unset: CPPFLAGS, CTARGET, EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS, INSTALL_MASK, PORTAGE_COMPRESS, PORTAGE_COMPRESS_FLAGS, PORTAGE_RSYNC_EXTRA_OPTS
I rather fear that this is normal behaviour. Do you have any idea if other distributions of abiword are different in this respect? If not, then you should talk to the people who run http://www.abisource.com/ instead of Gentoo's maintainers of the package.
yeah, confirming this is to be discussed with upstream devs. I have no preferences on this matter as this does not shock me :)
fixed in AbiWord 2.6.3: http://bugzilla.abisource.com/show_bug.cgi?id=11553
2.6.3 is now in tree.
