Description Peter Volkov (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-17 19:09:46 UTC
Since upstream bugzilla is down and I know that some of upstream read our bugzilla I'm posting this bug here.

Actually subject says all. Whenever I move balance to left or to the right channel audacious still plays to both channels at the same time. In previous version 1.4.6 it worked but made sound strange... This makes this nice player less usable for those who have left and right acoustic systems on different distance. Thank you in advance.

Please see what volume setting the ALSA plugin is adjusting for you. Once you know this, open alsamixer and confirm that this control is a stereo 2-channel control. It likely isn't, and newer version of the ALSA plugin no longer fall for it.

Well, I'm not sure what should I check, but I've experimented a little bit more. I found that both balance and volume became broken. And in alsa plugin I've tried both with Master or PCM mixer.

Also if I do "Modules Reload" and start playback again everything works, no matter what I'm doing! So at least this is possible to workaround this problem...

Go into alsamixer. Lower the volume on the Master & PCM devices, and then press q. If only the left channel bar raises while the right stays put, you have a stereo control. Please tell me whether Master & PCM are both stereo, or whether master is a mono control (common on EMU10K1-based cards).

Yes I have stereo control. And when everything works I can even open alsamixer and follow changes I do in audacios with volume and balance(bars raise or move down), but at some instant of time something broke and alsamixer together with volume control became stop to reveal any changes during slider motion in audacious.

They are both stereo as I can manage channels separately in alsamixer but sometimes this became broken in audacious.

I could not find any sequence of actions which guarantee to reproduce this problem, but it's perfectly reproducible here... Just may be try to restart audacious and immediately after restart play with volume control and balance. Here it'll lock at some moment.

This is on:

00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 01)

Also this is reproducible on my brother system that is also thinkpad, but a different one X60. I think it's also have intel audio inside...

Peter, CCR has finally been able to reproduce this, and has cut some apparently unnecessary timer code from the ALSA plugin. Please tell me how 1.5.1 does, which is in portage now.

Seems to be fixed. At least I did not manage to reproduce this bug any more. I'll ask my brother to check and if it'll be reproduced I'll reopen bug. ATM I consider bug FIXED. Thank you for notice and CCR for the fix :)
