Description Vladimir Kokarev 2008-04-16 22:32:19 UTC
Eclipse 3.3.1.1-r1 sometimes crashes with the following output to console:
/usr/libexec/gecko: No such file or directory.
---
Note, that this bug often causes data loss
I found a way to reproduce this behavior

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start eclipse, open some java file
2.Point mouse at any element in text, that has tooltip
3.Click the tooltip (it's the hardest step, takes some practicing :) ) (actually you should start pointing mouse at tooltip even before it is shown)

Actual Results:
eclipse crashes

hs_err_pid20240.log

Here the same problem. Crash usually happen in random moments. I had the same problem with the package downloaded from eclipse's website (I mean that it wasn't installed with emerge).

Here what I get in the terminal

Very verbose logs from similar (and almost definitely related) problem

There seems to be a bigger issue here with Java giving segfaults on certain configurations -- apparently involved in a large number of bugs that have been resolved with "(install|configure) bug-buddy properly", which resolution IMNSHO might be missing the point.

Looks like http://bugs.opensolaris.org/view_bug.do?bug_id=6600538 hints that this is an upstream thing, but people run Eclipse all day every day, so it can't be broken for everyone.

Anyway, here's a big ol' log, created thusly...

export VM_ARGS='-verbose -showversion'
unset -v CLASSPATH
unset -v VMHANDLE
unset -v GTK_MODULES
unset -v GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID
env |sort > ~/log/eclipse.log
eclipse-3.3 -showlocation -verbose -debug -noExit -console -consoleLog 2>&1 |tee -a ~/log/eclipse.log

(See also my hs error log and emerge --info to be posted in a moment)

Comment 10 Ralph Hartley 2008-09-24 20:35:03 UTC
I think this may be a dupe of Bug#215150 which is itself a manifestation of
a JVM bug:
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6614100

All the log files posted here (plus the ones I get) are the same as for that bug except for the one posted by the original reporter, and that was a file from bug-buddy, which doesn't contain enough information (or not the same information anyway).

The bug did seem to go away for a while, but it wasn't really fixed in the released JVMs (should be OK in Java 1.7).

One of the workarounds given in that bug:
echo exclude org/eclipse/core/internal/dtree/DataTreeNode forwardDeltaWith >.hotspot_compiler
but *only* if the .hotspot_compiler file was in the *current* directory when eclipse was run.

The workaround only fixes the most common case.

This Eclipse version is obsolete and removed from tree. Closing.
