Description Brian Harring (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-12 14:01:00 UTC
The *very* short version is that after long term history of spb/eroyf, when active, triggering disruption in #pkgcore, I leveled a ban on both. Based on recent behaviour? Nope, mainly my main laptop bailed, and rather then worry about folk watching them while I'm offline, I leveled a ban. Not the nicest thing, but such is life. Never claimed I wasn't a bastard (although I'll kick folks in the shin if they ever claim I was a bastardly op in a gentoo channel).

To be clear also, at least for eroyf, I already had an active ban. His hostmask has since changed, so (un)intental ban evasion was occurring- obviously I corrected that to say the least.

So... that's the backstory. Frankly, the backstory is moot- a gentoo developer shouldn't be retaliating in gentoo channels for perceived slights elsewhere. Banning my ass in #gentoo-dev, if there is an arguable case that I'll cause disruption I have no complaints about- that said, banning me out of perceived annoyance over other realms of irc seems like a pretty questionable (ab)use of ops, *especially* considering #gentoo-dev is communal and has rules governing devs.
Meanwhile, snippets of #-dev is inlined: if folks believe my commentary was out of line, hey, sorry- frankly leave the ban if you believe it. Dlse do whatever y'all do and kindly lift the ban so I can go back to correcting portage misstatements and answering general questions.

Re: cc'ing of council, doing it on the request of a dev also- if invalid, kindly punt it.

06:15 <@spb> ferringb: er, what logic would that be?
06:16 <+ferringb> spb: take it to pm if you want to discuss it, rather then bringing a non-gentoo ban up in a gentoo channel ban.
06:16 <@spb> you could just answer the question
06:16 <@spb> in pm if you prefer it there
06:16 <+ferringb> spb: or you could avoid trying to stir up shit in here to get it lifted.
06:16 <+ferringb> your choice. further discussion will be in pm, if occuring at all.
06:20 -!- mode/#gentoo-dev [+b *!*@c-71-204-151-29.hsd1.ca.comcast.net] by spb
06:20 -!- ferringb was kicked from #gentoo-dev by spb [banning you now in case you troll in future. turn and turn about]

Finally, my bannination of an ex-dev and a current dev in #pkgcore was not intended to stir up shit in mainline gentoo domains- mainly was intended to keep my domain clean/tidy, pardon for it spilling over.

Brian,

your ban has been lifted from #gentoo-dev.
I'm closing this bug as you only requested to lift the ban. If you want us to discuss something else, please reopen the bug.

Unrestricting the bug.
