Description Willard Dawson 2008-04-11 14:04:02 UTC
genkernal-3.4.10_pre9 fails when busybox source tarball (busybox-1.7.4.tar.bz2) is not present on system. Current version of busybox installed is 1.9.0

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Andrew Gaffney (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-11 14:08:04 UTC
You need to run etc-update to get the new DISTDIR var in /etc/genkernel.conf
Comment 2 Willard Dawson 2008-04-11 14:45:35 UTC
I typically run dispatch-conf. Interesting that it does not apply the necessary update.

OK, so I just now ran etc-update, and checked the value of BUSYBOX_VER, which still shows 1.7.4. I unmerged and re-emerged busybox, ran both dispatch-conf and etc-update, but the value remains unchanged in /etc/genkernel.conf.

It would seem that there is more afoot than your proposed fix.

WDAWSONLT linux # dispatch-conf
WDAWSONLT linux # grep BUSYBOX_VER /etc/genkernel.conf
BUSYBOX_VER="1.7.4"
BUSYBOX_SRCTAR="${DISTDIR}/busybox-${BUSYBOX_VER}.tar.bz2"
BUSYBOX_DIR="busybox-${BUSYBOX_VER}"
BUSYBOX_BINCACHE="%%CACHE%%/busybox-${BUSYBOX_VER}-%%ARCH%%.tar.bz2"
WDAWSONLT linux # /
WDAWSONLT linux # etc-update
Scanning Configuration files...
Exiting: Nothing left to do; exiting. :)
WDAWSONLT linux # grep BUSYBOX_VER /etc/genkernel.conf
BUSYBOX_VER="1.7.4"
BUSYBOX_SRCTAR="${DISTDIR}/busybox-${BUSYBOX_VER}.tar.bz2"
BUSYBOX_DIR="busybox-${BUSYBOX_VER}"
BUSYBOX_BINCACHE="%%CACHE%%/busybox-${BUSYBOX_VER}-%%ARCH%%.tar.bz2"

Comment 3 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-11 15:14:13 UTC
Umm... it *should* show 1.7.4, as that's the version that genkernel downloads and uses. Did you clear anything out of your distfiles? When you merge genkernel, it should pull in the necessary distfiles. Try running "emerge -f genkernel" and see if it pulls down the 1.7.4 tarball.
Comment 4 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-11 15:15:05 UTC
Also, Andrew was talking about the DISTDIR variable in genkernel.conf, not anything busybox-related.

DISTDIR (/usr/portage/distfiles) has not changed since my initial Gentoo install.

Yes, I regularly clear out distfiles to conserve space. Normally, applications that depend on other apps will fetch as needed when emerging, at least. I suppose I was (and still am) surprised to learn that genkernel has a run-time dependency on files (namely busybox) in distfiles... even though I regularly use genkernel to compile new kernel revisions.

Thanks for the assistance.
