This is one of the few usable desklets I've found on the website above.
The version of gnome-extra/gdesklets-core it works smoothly with for me is v0.34.3.

gdesklets 0.36 provides a quote of the day desklet already, did you give it a try ?

This IS the package I'm using. It seems to have been integrated upstream at the latest version bump, but Gentoo still has no ebuild for it.

Personally, I prefer to install any plugin through the portage interface.

What do you mean by this? If it's the ebuild that's part of the core, it's installed into /usr/lib/gdesklets/Displays as of 0.36. If you are saying the ebuild you're providing here is the same as the one in 0.36, please mark the bug FIXED.

If it's in the upstream package you will have installed it through portage. You have options if you want to be able to eliminate/remove/filter out the desklets provided by gdesklets-core.

There are no "desklets" (or displays) at all in gdesklet-core. According to the ebuild's elog:

"gDesklets displays are required before the library
will be usable. The displays are found in -
           x11-plugins/desklet-* ,
at http://www.gdesklets.de, or at http://gdesklets.zencomputer.ca."

That means that desklets are expected to be found in x11-plugins/desklet-*, unless a user downloads them for himself alone. As far as the whole Gentoo system is concerned, they should be installed by portage.

OK, it's fixed in gdesklets-core-0.36-r1. At the time I was trying, only the beta release was in the portage tree, sorry.
