I prelinked my system using prelink -amR (prelink-20030505, kde-3.1.2), and now kdm refuses to start correctly. Starting KDE manually fails with an error in kded; I cannot find detailed error messages for this or for kdm, but would be happy to add them if someone can find them for me. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.emerge -e kde 2.prelink -amR 3.Now try and run KDE Actual Results: KDE fails to start Expected Results: Started KDE and KDM Portage 2.0.48 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.2.3, glibc-2.3.2-r1) ================================================================= System uname: 2.4.21-rc2-ac3 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/gentoo/ http://gentoo.oregonstate.edu/ http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /var/qmail/control /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/env.d" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="/usr/local/portage" USE="oss apm gnome libg++ mikmod nls gdbm berkdb tetex svga tcltk guile gpm tcpd libwww esd imlib gtk motif 3dnow acpi acpi4linux alsa arts avi cdr crypt cups dga doc dvb dvd encode gd gif imap ipv6 java jpeg kde kerberos ldap mmx mozilla mpeg mule mysql ncurses oggvorbis opengl pam pda pdflib perl pic png postgres python qt quicktime readline samba scanner sdl slang spell sse ssl tiff truetype usb wmf X xml xml2 xmms xv zlib x86" COMPILER="gcc3" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -mcpu=athlon-xp -Os -fforce-addr -fforce-mem -frerun-cse-after-loop -frerun-loop-opt -pipe" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -mcpu=athlon-xp -Os -fforce-addr -fforce-mem -frerun-cse-after-loop -frerun-loop-opt -pipe" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" MAKEOPTS="-j2 -s" AUTOCLEAN="yes" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" FEATURES="sandbox ccache prelink"
As a workaround to get me into KDE, emerge kdebase kdelibs works.
You may want to report this to the kde folks so they can track down where the error lies in their code. Prelinking is a tricky topic to talk about because most people consider it to be buggy or not completely safe. I'm not sure what the best resolve to this is other than, for the moment, saying to not prelink kde :)
I am having the same problem. The problem that I am having is the same as described in the forums here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=49543
There is not much we can do. For now basically, don't use prelink if it doesn't work for you. If you provide us with a bug page from kde's bugzilla that has a patch we will be happy to apply it, but hunting prelink bugs down is not a priority right now.
Seems to work again in KDE 3.1.4
