Description Chr. Schaefer 2008-04-06 15:57:50 UTC
While booting the LiveCD 2008.0 beta1 I get the message

* starting portmap
* ERROR: cannot start nfsmount as rpc.statd could not start

Not sure if it has to do anything with bug #203646. This is only a cosmetical bug for me and the service can be started manually later without error message.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot the i686 LiveCD 2008.0 beta1
2.
3.

Actual Results:
Error message while starting service nfsmount

Expected Results:
Service should have been started normally

I'm using image livecd-i686-installer-2008.0_beta1.iso to install.
Comment 1 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-08 21:57:01 UTC
Are there any errors in /var/log/messages or dmesg about this?
Comment 2 Chr. Schaefer 2008-04-09 03:34:59 UTC
(In reply to comment #1)
No, only this line:
Apr 9 05:08:31 livecd rc-scripts: ERROR: cannot start nfsmount as rpc.statd could not start

Both rpc.statd and nfsmount services have status "not started".

I was wrong when I said nfsmount can be started manually later without error message, in fact I get
* starting NFS statd
* starting NFS sm-notify
/var/lib/nfs/state: bad file size, setting state = 1
Backgrounding to notify hosts...
* mounting NFS filesystems...

Another interesting thing: During boot I don't get the message "starting NFS statd" at all. If I boot the Live CD in interactive mode, I get asked for service "autoconfig", but not for nfsmount.

But if I stop and start service autoconfig manually on the command line of the Live CD, it starts nfsmount normally (with the same messages as above). It seems like there is some problem with the service dependencies during boot.
Comment 3 Wim Muskee 2008-04-09 18:46:20 UTC
I experience the same problem with the x86 minimal install cd.
Comment 4 Martin Mokrejš 2008-04-11 10:25:31 UTC
Same here on x86.
Comment 5 Chris Gianelloni (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-12 18:01:19 UTC
Yeah, interactivity is fairly broken on the release media, since we call nearly everything from autoconfig, so we can start/stop services based on kernel command line options.

Hopefully this will be resolved with Beta 2.
Comment 6 Chr. Schaefer 2008-05-12 15:42:00 UTC
Error is still in 2008.0_beta2, tested with livedvd-i686-installer-2008.0_beta2

When booting with nonfs kernel parameter the error doesn't appear. As before services can be started manually without error from the command line.
Comment 7 Richard Scott 2009-02-07 12:57:06 UTC
I've found that if you set the following in /etc/conf.d/rc:

RC_NET_STRICT_CHECKING="yes"

You won't get this error and portmap, nfs etc starts at boot time! :-)

Obviously this requires rebuilding the CD image with the required change for this to work so hopefuly it can be included in the next CD release?
Comment 8 Evgen Boppi 2009-08-22 12:06:41 UTC
I have probably the same issue booting the live cd (install-amd64-minimal-20090806.iso)

Error: cannot start nfsmount as rpc.statd could not start
Comment 9 Donald 2010-07-28 00:13:49 UTC
Same error message booting from 'install-amd64-minimal-20100408.iso'.

Comment 10 Jorge Manuel B. S. Vicetto (RETIRED) Gentoo Infrastructure gentoo-dev 2011-06-19 13:04:34 UTC
I haven't seen this error message in recent autobuild installcds.
If you hit this issue again, feel free to reopen the bug.
Comment 11 stu jordan 2011-06-22 16:38:04 UTC
Hi...

Just started the install process today (2011-06-22) on my laptop, and got exactly the behavior reported by Chr. Schaefer on 2008-04-06.

I'm booting from install-x86-minimal-20110614.iso on a CD.

I'm not yet knowledgable enough to interpret the error. In fact, I'm installing gentoo as part of an effort to understand linux. So for now I'll just ignore it, and proceed according to the handbook until something doesn't work. But if this is something I should NOT ignore, would appreciate it if someone would mention it!

thanks,

Stu Jordan

I am getting on my ~x86 laptop for years. In /var/log/messages in nothing more than what is shown on the console:

# rpcbind -l -d
rpcbind: error while loading shared libraries: libicui18n.so.46: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
#

I just started "revdep-rebuild -i" to ensure this dependency is not tracked by revdep-rebuild. Maybe that is the culprit?

Please ensure the console receives the STDERR output of the failing command. So, an operc issue in addition?

Indeed, that is caused by broken dependency checks, see below that revdep-rebuild does not report rpcbind in the list of broken binaries.

Please re-open the bug. And, I think I saw it also in livedvd-x86-amd64-32ul-11.0.iso.

Re-opening the bug.

Are you getting this on the CD or on an installed system?

The stuff in comment #14 is on the live, ~x86 laptop.

LiveDVD 11.0 gives me "same" error although I haven't tested whether that is caused by the dependency issue causing revdep-rebuild to miss the broken libs. But I believe it could be the same reason. Once openrc is fixed to pass the stderr to the system console it will become more obvious what is going on. In principle, I can re-test the LiveDVD but anyways, I would first say fix the dependency issue, then openrc, then the LiveDVD.

Due to the "recent" changes related to nfsmount, I'm going to close this bug until someone can provide evidence that this is still relevant for the latest builds.
