that's with a 2.20 or a 2.22 gnome desktop ? Did you look for similar issues upstream ?

so basically you're saying it never worked, right ? That'd be worth reporting upstream if it still fails with basic CFLAGS (-O2, -march, -pipe)
I'm also experiencing this issue, but as with bug #209962, it started when I upgraded from xorg-server-1.3.0.0-r5 to xorg-server-1.4.0.90-r3.
Fixed for me with gnome-base/gnome-control-center-2.26.0-r1 Reopen if you are still having problems
