I've got an AMD k6-2 450 with an off-board Adaptec 2930 with a Plextor CD   
attached to it.  When booting off the 1.4 RC4 stage 1 install CD it gets  
through the initial kernel boot then tries to mount the CD and fails and puts 
me at a '#' prompt.  It's trying to mount /newroot/mnt/cdrom (or something 
like that).  When I look after it fails, there are no CD devices listed there.

are you trying with  
"gentoo doscsi"  or 
"smp doscsi"    at the prompt

I didn't even know there was a "doscsi" option.  When I did "gentoo doscsi" it worked.  Thanks.
