>=2.6.23 kernels are not able to boot on some Dell servers (PE1950 with MPT SAS with two HDDs as MIRROR for example) and require this patch recently included in the mainline (2.6.24.4): http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.24.y.git;a=commitdiff;h=282dac698e338351d3b9fb9db2739fe07e1c2ef9 It seems that LiveCD/LiveDVD/InstallCD are based on the gentoo-sources-2.6.23-r8, where the patch is missing.
Try booting with the irqpoll kernel argument. If that doesn't work, try the irqfixup argument.
How irqpoll or irqfixup can prevent dereferencing a NULL pointer?
I suppose it wouldn't. But you never said what the error was, you just linked to a kernel patch.
The kernel used for 2008.0 Beta 2 is 2.6.24.4-based. Could you test it when it is released in the next few days and see if it resolves this issue for you?
Does it work now? This bug reminds me #215904 If is so, better to set dependencies or specify better the hardware where it fails.
Solved with 2008.0_beta2, thanks.
Cool, thanks. We'll RESOLVE this once 2008.0 final is released.
