Detailed description: With a dying IDE-drive at least on kernel version 2.6.18-gentoo-r6 there was sometimes a dmesg output like the following: ---- hdd: dma_intr: status=0x59 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest Error } hdd: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=199907788, high=11, lo w=15358412, sector=199907781 ide: failed opcode was: unknown end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 199907781 ---- Anyhow the system kept on working. Newer kernels (at least since 2.6.24-r3) don't show this message any more. Instead, the system load increases until it becomes unavailable and has to be reset. Latest failing kernel version: Linux version 2.6.24-gentoo-r4 (gcc version 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2 p1.1)) Latest known working kernel version: Linux version 2.6.18-gentoo-r6 (gcc version 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2 p1.1))

Did the hard disk die? Do you have the same issues with later 2.6.25-gentoo-rX kernels?
