I created a "Synchronizing Portage" in the 2.0.48 version of make.conf and added some info on setting SYNC to a continent specific rotation as mentioned earlier in the newsletter. I also moved RSYNC_RETRIES and RSYNC_TIMEOUT to the "Synchronizing Portage" section, but left RSYNC_EXCLUDEFROM in the "Advanced Features" section. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce:
Created attachment 12347 [details, diff] make.conf patch against 2.0.48
I didn't add country specific rotations as that would make the SYNC section even more huge and possibly confusing (as they would have to install bind-utils to use host to test if their country is valid). Perhaps make.conf be updated at a later date when most of these continent specific rotations get full. I also see two potential problems with these rotations. 1) rsync.au.gentoo.org only has one host, this might put too much load on that one particular mirror. Perhaps some of the faster mirrors from rsync.gentoo.org could be added in the mean time. Perhaps some mirrors in Australia haven't been added to the rsync.au.gentoo.org rotation yet. 2) rsync.europe.gentoo.org has 28 hosts. When the number of hosts goes above 20 it seems to fall back on tcp instead of udp (which was the reason these seperate rotations were made in the first place), this might cause anyone with strict firewall rules some trouble unless this number is reduced.
The diff is greatly appreciated. :) Saves me a lot of time when syncing the platforms. Thanks for the note about europe... Mention it to the server guys.
