xbattbar is a simple APM battery status displayer on X.
People who prefer light-weight window managers like *box or *twm
may find it interesting ;) Unfortunately it doesn't run on
ACPI machines, but still it is useful for most laptop users.

I suggest x11-misc/xbattbar (or maybe app-misc/xbattbar).
