Description Willard Dawson 2008-03-30 15:46:58 UTC
After successfully emerging vmware-server (currently at 1.0.5.80187), executing vmware leads to run-time errors.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Execute vmware
2.
3.

Actual Results:
After successfully emerging vmware-server (currently at 1.0.5.80187), executing vmware leads to errors:

/opt/vmware/server/lib/bin/vmware: /opt/vmware/server/lib/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
/opt/vmware/server/lib/bin/vmware: /opt/vmware/server/lib/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.2.3/libstdc++.so.6)
/opt/vmware/server/lib/bin/vmware: /opt/vmware/server/lib/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
/opt/vmware/server/lib/bin/vmware: /opt/vmware/server/lib/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.2.3/libstdc++.so.6)
/opt/vmware/server/lib/bin/vmware: /opt/vmware/server/lib/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_3.4' not found (required by /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2)
/opt/vmware/server/lib/bin/vmware: /opt/vmware/server/lib/lib/libgcc_s.so.1/libgcc_s.so.1: version `GCC_4.2.0' not found (required by /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.2.3/libstdc++.so.6)

Expected Results:
Actually starting vmware.

Manually re-linking the offending library file allows vmware to start.

# cd /opt/vmware/server/lib/lib/libgcc_s.so.1
# rm libgcc_s.so.1

# ln -f /usr/lib/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.2.3/libgcc_s.so.1 .

Comment 1 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-01 10:20:34 UTC
Thanks for filing this bug. Unfortunately it's a known problem and there's little we can do to fix it (it also happens with vmware-server-console-1.0.5 with newer gcc versions). The best workaround at the moment is simply to remove the /opt/vmware/server/console/lib/lib/libgcc_s.so.1. (This also happens with vmware server, but we tend not to recommend the use of the local console program, due to removed X dependencies for headless installations). Another more generic workaround is to run vmware with the VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="yes" environment variable set. That's less recommended because it then uses no system libraries, and only the pre-shipped libraries (which we can't update or maintain in the case of bug fixes or security alerts). Sadly that's the best information I can provide at the moment... 5:(
Comment 2 Mike Auty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-04-26 16:56:39 UTC
Ok, this has now been pushed into the tree, and bumped too (although the bump isn't stable). It's only been applied to 1.0.5, anyone still using 1.0.4 please upgrade (they should be interchangable). Please let me know if you run into any problems...
