Description Peter Asplund 2008-03-28 15:30:42 UTC
When using png images in Irrlicht, they show up all grey and have no alpha transparency.

During loading of the images, it puts out the error:
PNG FATAL ERROR: Invalid image width
PNG FATAL ERROR: Invalid image width
Could not load texture: foo.png

and when the game starts, they are just completely gray.

According to the Irrlicht devs, this is because a bug (on 64 bit systems) in their internal libpng, but it was fixed in Irrlicht version 1.4. But the problem never went away for me. I think this is because Irrlicht is using the system wide libpng 1.2.25 instead of the irrlicht specific one.

It is possible to undefine _IRR_USE_NON_SYSTEM_LIB_PNG_ in IrrCompileConfig.g to use the system library, which has also been done in the gentoo-ebuild (which I think makes sense since it's better to use the "real" library), and I tried it but it didn't work for me.

It is a whole other bug, but since I updated to libpng-1.2.25, all my png icons in Firefox and Epiphany disappeared, as well as in all webpages.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Irrlicht
2. Write a program (or dowload the sourcecode to Irrlicht inc. examples)
3. Compile the program or example
4. See the output and the sucky and depressing graphics

Actual Results:
During loading of the images, it outputs the error:
PNG FATAL ERROR: Invalid image width
PNG FATAL ERROR: Invalid image width
Could not load texture: foo.png

and when the game starts, the images are just completely gray.

Just like: http://www.peterasplund.se/subspacebattle/screenshot.png

Expected Results:
Glorius graphics and no error messages.
Kind of like: http://www.peterasplund.se/subspacebattle/gameplay.png

Might as well add something extra.. This is where I put my emerge --info:

The bug still exists with libpng version 1.2.31 and Irrlicht 1.4.1.

@mr_bones_: You added amd64 to CC, what would you like to happen here? We can remove the keyword until there is a fix provided I guess.
Comment 4 Mr. Bones. (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-10-02 16:47:39 UTC
I always CC amd64 on issues where it seems like an amd64-specific problem. Since I only have x86 here I need a wider audience for possible fixes.

That is fine but maybe next time a small comment with "cc'ing amd64 for a wider audience" or similar would be more benificial. Otherwise I feel it will get ignored by us because we have more pertinant bugs to work on.

Anyway, the URL above seems to describe a fix. If you would like to create a patch, someone could test it. If that "fix" isn't desired, then we should probably just remove the amd64 kw. Please advise when possible. Thanks.
Comment 6 Peter Asplund 2008-11-30 15:07:30 UTC
Sorry for asking, but is there a fix for this yet?
Comment 7 Peter Asplund 2009-01-05 15:31:37 UTC
Fixed in the new version (1.5) of Irrlicht?
Comment 8 Peter Asplund 2009-01-27 13:38:02 UTC
I just saw that the bug seems to be in Irrlicht:
http://irrlicht.sourceforge.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=184576#184576

I haven't tested the patch, but hopefully it will fix the issue. I will propose the bug as resolved if it works!
Comment 9 Peter Asplund 2009-01-27 23:01:52 UTC
This issue has been fixed, and the problem was actually because a stupid user (me).
