For some reason when playing a video with subtitles of Undetermined (und) language mplayer refuses to show them, even if given the flag '-slang und'. I have only tried this with Matroska video--I don't have anything that has subtitles (let alone of Undetermined language) other than MKV files. So, I'm not sure if this is the case with other container types as well. For the record, run midentify on the file and post output here. Also go ahead and add +srt to use flags.
Here's the output of midentify on a file that doesn't work (This same file works fine with media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc2_p25993): ID_VIDEO_ID=0 ID_AUDIO_ID=0 ID_AID_0_LANG=jpn ID_SUBTITLE_ID=0 ID_SID_0_LANG=und ID_FILENAME=Test-Video.mkv ID_DEMUXER=mkv ID_VIDEO_FORMAT=avc1 ID_VIDEO_BITRATE=0 ID_VIDEO_WIDTH=704 ID_VIDEO_HEIGHT=400 ID_VIDEO_FPS=23.976 ID_VIDEO_ASPECT=1.7600 ID_AUDIO_FORMAT=MP4A ID_AUDIO_BITRATE=0 ID_AUDIO_RATE=48000 ID_AUDIO_NCH=2 ID_LENGTH=1480.02 ID_VIDEO_CODEC=ffh264 ID_AUDIO_BITRATE=128000 ID_AUDIO_RATE=48000 ID_AUDIO_NCH=2 ID_AUDIO_CODEC=faad Adding the srt flag has no effect.
Just an update, media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc2_p26300-r1 has the same problem.
Another update, media-video/mplayer-1.0_rc2_p26450 seems to work fine.
