at the moment, the commands which modify files when one runs etc-update are numeric. its much easier to remember a mnemonic than a number. i'd suggest something like the following for command selection: r: Replace original with update d: Delete update, keeping original as is m: Interactively merge original with update s: Show differences again i: Ignore this update I find I have to keep re-reading the menu, no matter how many times I've run etc-update. Putting a hold on feature requests for portage as they are drowning out the bugs. Most of these features should be available in the next major version of portage. But for the time being, they are just drowning out the major bugs and delaying the next version's progress. Any bugs that contain patches and any bugs for etc-update or dispatch-conf can be reopened. Sorry, I'm just not good enough with bugzilla. ;)

I don't think anybody is interested in working on this, reopen if you can provide a patch that implements what you're after.
