It seems that xfree comes with more (optional?) drivers than emerge xfree builds. That is in my situation i was looking for the support for my Savage 4. On xfree.org i found reference to a "savage4" driver but wouldn't find it on my system. In the sources then (ebuild xfree unpack) i found sth. but it seems to me this doesn't get included in the build. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. emerge xfree 2. verify existence of savage_drv.o (this is guessed) in xfree driver directory Actual Results: found no such driver, X cannot use relevant cards efficiently Expected Results: docs on xfree.org suggest that a savage_drv.o should be available out of the standard source found a guy with similar problems like mine here: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=16707 Topicwise related bug files seem to be: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=228 http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8189

yes, but is it -r2 or -r3?
Does the question mean it has been solved in r3 ? Then we don't need this report... qpkg -i -I xfree x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r2 * Xfree86: famous and free X server [ http://www.xfree.org ]
Michael, from what I know, the default savage driver contains the savage4 stuffs. Someone on IRC yesterday had a similar issue to yours, and discovered the same thing. Please confirm.
I reemerged -r2 and the driver has not been installed. I want to point to the fact that i run on a Blade100 Sparc box as a possible reason that this doesn't happen everwhere. For a possibly more detailed look at it, you've got my mail address.
Michael -- would have been useful to know when you first filed the bug :P that's why we encourage the emerge info output on the bug reports. Knowing it is a sparc issue, it is now easy to fix. Stay tuned.
k, learned about the emerge info thing now... :)= but "Hardware" is a general property of every bug, too. :P
Michael, I have updated -r2 to add the savage driver (though it really should have built anyway, so it is weird that it did not). Additionally, I have released -r3 into testing, so please feel free to test that instead.
so, michael, any luck?
-r3 builds with savage_drv
enjoy :)
