If ./configure is run, the configure script checks for ncurses with wide-character support (sys-libs/ncurses[unicode]), and links to that instead.
Without this, it links to libncurses.so, and all UTF-8 characters in tig look borked.

It seems that this is only true for the recently tig-0.10.1, I was looking at the git repo..
