Description Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2008-03-18 10:57:13 UTC
Updating my notebook I unmerged sys-power/powersave (becuase of the hard mask and corresponding comment) and updated sys-power/kpowersave to version 0.7.3.

Now, at first glance kpowersave seems to be running normally, but it cannot actually do anything. An "active scheme" change does not change dimming of the display (as it did previously), and a "suspend to ram" command (which worked flawlessly before) just locks the screen.

I suspect d-bus permissions are missing. Reboot did not help. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

can you please make sure you are in the plugdev group? Also what hal version are you using? Try a newer one maybe..

emerge info would be cool.

Are you maybe using policykit? That is not recommended..
Comment 2 Andreas K. Hüttel archtester gentoo-dev 2008-03-18 15:57:23 UTC
Thanks a lot-

> can you please make sure you are in the plugdev group?

Adding myself to the plugdev group solved most (but not all) problems.
(Where is this documented?)
Changing the active scheme now sets display brightness and CPU frequency correctly.

But - when I initiate a manual suspend to ram with kpowersave, I still get a dialog box:
"Could not umount external media before suspend / standby. (Reason: Could not call DCOP interface to umount external media.) Would you like to continue...?"
Since I had no external media mounted, I continued and suspend to ram works fine.

Any clue where the remaining config error might be?

> Also what hal version
> are you using? Try a newer one maybe..

sys-apps/hal-0.5.9.1-r3

I can try a newer version if you now still think this is useful. (I'd like to keep the number of unstable packages at a reasonable minimum on the machine though...)

No, definitely not. (At least I don't know this program and esearch tells me it is not installed (and hard-masked).)

it is mentioned when installing hal :-) The little messages hal spits out that everyone ignores..

do you use kde? Is dcop available? you can try it on the commandline. But I think this is all just configuration ;-) Better to continue on the forums or mailing lists or irc...

closing as fixed.

What message is that?

I get the following from kpowersave if I run it in a terminal and it doesn't poll, it just gets stuck at the battery/AC state when I first start the machine. I get the right info out of sysfs, the old proc interface is disabled, I'm using gentoo-sources-2.6.24-r3

I get a similar problem with 0.7.3, and I am in the plugdev group:

kpowersave: ERROR: Could not get argument from reply: Argument 0 is specified to be of type "int32", but is actually of type "string"
kpowersave:
kpowersave: WARNING: dbusHAL::callBackSuspend dbus_message_get_args failed, maybe timouted

I tried suspend-to-disk, but it also only locks the screen like it did for Andreas. I have sys-power/suspend installed, s2disk called as root works.

Shall I create a new bugreport for this? Or will this one be reopened?
If this is a configuration issue, there should be a hint somewhere that additional configuration is required...

Although, they look non fatal since the app successfully detaches from the terminal. Changing powerstates, suspend to ram, everything is working for me.

I'm in plugdev group and hal is built with laptop use flag.
