the only way i can reproduce this is to remove bison altogether. what does yacc -V say? can you try remerging bison?

I have re-emerged sys-devel/bison-2.3 ; the problem still appears.

I was able to get ftjam to compile and emerge successfully by first emerging yacc (I used dev-util/yacc-1.9.1-r3, the stable version on amd64 at the time of this writing).

Since the problem is resolved for me, I'm comfortable with having this bug closed if it's not affecting anyone else.
Comment 7 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-03-20 01:09:53 UTC
i'd like to leave it open until i understand the root cause, even if just to see if anyone else runs into it.

That sounds fine to me. If necessary, I will be available for testing.

To clarify: I did not have any version of yacc installed when this problem appeared. That is, when I emerged dev-util/yacc as described above, I was installing it as a new package, not, say, re-emerging an existing installation of dev-util/yacc .

I had the same problem, too (with bison-2.3 and without yacc).

With:
emerge yacc; emerge -1 ftjam; emerge -C yacc
ftjam could be compiled without any problems.
(yacc was 1.9.1-r3)

Same here.

okay, i'll need to fix this asap.

i did look into this but couldn't find the problem. i need to figure out how to reproduce it.
Comment 14 Fabio Bonfante 2008-05-28 15:30:48 UTC
Same problem
"equery b y.tab.c" results in a not found in any package.
While emerging yacc portage detect a collision: /usr/bin/yacc
Emerge bison after yacc doesn't result in any collision detection.
Unmerging yacc an "orphaned" file /usr/bin/yacc remain in the system. It's the symlink at yacc.bison.

Comment 15 Emmanuel Favre_Nicolin 2008-07-01 15:02:57 UTC
IN fact, I guess yacc is missing in the dependency of dev-util/ftjam-2.5.3_rc2?

I had the same problem. I had to emerge yacc first to install ftjam.
Comment 16 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-07-20 19:51:08 UTC
the next person that hits this, send me as much info about your system pre-workaround as possible. tar up the work directory and email it to me if you can.

thanks!

$ type -P yacc
$ file /bin/yacc
$ file /usr/bin/yacc
$ cat /usr/bin/yacc.bison
Comment 19 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-07-22 00:42:42 UTC
actually, run `./jam0 -a -d7` in work/ftjam-2.5.3rc2.

it looks like yacc isn't even being called on my system, it falls back to the yyacc script in the work directory.

ftjam-2.5.3-i-hate-yacc.patch

please give this a try.
Comment 21 Róbert Čerňanský 2008-08-02 19:42:32 UTC
Patch works for me.

I had the same problem. I've tried your patch (without emerging yacc or so) and ftjam-2.5.3_rc2 emerged successfully. Thanks.
Comment 22 chkno 2008-08-03 03:49:18 UTC
ftjam-2.5.3-i-hate-yacc.patch worked for me too.
Comment 23 Ryan Hill (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-08-03 08:31:44 UTC
thanks guys, sorry it took so long to sort out.
