Apperently adding Option "TextureVideo" "On" into xorg.conf will cause the new drivers to use avivo, or whatever it does for 3d rendering, I found the thread (listed in bug URL) and it was mentioned about it being used, added, and sure enough, processor usage dropped dramatically and performance increased. We mention the option of putting XAANoOffScreenPixmaps, can the maintainer of ati-drivers add this into the ebuild, or even try to have it patch the xorg.conf? I would just say mention it at the end of the ebuild. I think this would fix a lot of people complaining about the performance of the new code base.
This option will not be needed explicitly anymore with the 8.05 release which came out yesterday. In this version, "TexturedVideo" is active by default and you have to explicitly turn it off if not wanted. So once the new driver is in portage, this one can probably be closed.
