After a random period of time between 0 and about 15 minutes the keyboard stops responding. This happens without doing anything other than browsing through the distribution using commands like cd and cat. I've tried booting noapm and that didn't help. Another user in the forums reports the same problem. For that user the system is still alive via the network. I haven't yet tried that. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Boot the CD 2.Type commands 3.Observe that the keyboard stops responding. Actual Results: Keyboard doesn't respond. Expected Results: Keyboard should continue responding.
First, use floppy method to upgrade bios to latest version and if you still have problems try the following. - boot with 'nousb' option - disable usb in bios
I have the latest bios (A06). I'll try the "nousb" and report. BTW, another user in the forum states that this problem does not occur with rc3. This is http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=331237.
No joy on "nousb". The keyboard still locks up after a while. I notice that I still see "Starting USB and PCI hotplugging" when I boot, but I assume it only means "PCI"? I have verified that, as a forum member reports, suspending and unsuspending the laptop gives you another few minutes of keyboard usage.
I meant to also state that the only USB disabling option I see in the BIOS is to disable "USB keyboards", and they are indeed disabled.
Further experimentation reveals this problem is related to the touchpad. Sliding my finger across the touchpad always and immediately causes the keyboard hang. This occurs nomatter how the BIOS is set WRT the touchpad, and whether or not I have a USB mouse connected. I don't have a PS/2 mouse but other users say that using one and setting the BIOS to automatically disable the touchpad when using another mouse device prevents the problem. I think this problem only appears random due to one's finger just glancing over the touchpad whilst one types. It seems USB is exhonerated.
Is this fixed in the final release of 1.4?
please try newer livecds
Moving these so we can remove the "Install CD" component from "Gentoo Linux". I apologize to everyone for this spam, but according to the bugzilla developers, this is the only reasonable way to do this.
