Description Jérôme Nicolle 2008-03-02 20:54:49 UTC
On a kernel built from gentoo-sources (2.6.23-gentoo-r9), with the RTL 8168/8169/811x driver (drivers/net/r8169.c), the Rx / Tx bytes counter (as shown by ifconfig) resets periodically when its value reach 2^32.

Suggestion : might be a 32 bit int used as byte counter, enlarging it to 64bit could be a simple workaround.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. On a machine with a RTL8168/8169/811x network adapter
2. Generate 5GB of network trafic in one direction
3. Take a look at ifconfigthe Rx or Tx counter has looped back to 0

Actual Results:
the Rx or Tx counter has looped back to 0

Expected Results:
Actual transfered data volume should be reported

Not yet reported on the kernel.org bugtracker, I cannot test it on a vanilla kernel for now.
Should be validated on a vanilla kernel and/or patched here

This bug isn't related to this particular device driver as I first thought. Problem occurs on some other kernel versions and ethernet adapters.

This unfortunately is by design for 32 bit systems.
