He is old and slow and likes things rot around in the tree. :) Perfectly fine to clean up here, since erc-5.2 comes with Emacs 22.1. However, in general the point is that a) it doesn't harm to keep at least one previous version in the tree, and b) if there are undetected problems with the new version, it is nice to provide users with an easy possibility to downgrade.
I know the reasoning...and only did this to provoke you. And it worked. :)
