yesterday there was no problem at all, this morning I emerged the following things: 1053179406: >>> emerge (1 of 17) media-sound/xmms-1.2.7-r21 to / 1053179793: >>> emerge (2 of 17) media-sound/mad-0.14.2b-r2 to / (the other 15 packages where kde-3.1.2 which weren't available yet) during the emerges I saw no problems at all, but now when I want to play an mp3 (right plugin selected ofcourse) It skips every mp3 like it isn't on the computer anymore. (but if that was the case I would get a message in xchat) So It just skips all the mp3's, I tried the music files from UT2K3 too (those are .ogg) and same problem Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. start xmms 2. load mp3s/oggs 3. play Actual Results: xmms doesn't play anything just skips the files Expected Results: play my music Portage 2.0.48_pre6 (default-x86-1.4, gcc-3.2.2, glibc-2.3.2-r1) ================================================================= System uname: 2.5.69 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2000+ GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://sunsite.dk/mirrors/gentoo/ http://gentoo.linux.no/ http://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/gentoo/ ftp://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/os/linux/gentoo/ " CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /var/qmail/control /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/3.1/share/config /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/config" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/env.d" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" USE="x86 xinerama gtk2 pic acpi acpi4linux 3dnow aalib alsa avi crypt dga encode gif gtk imlib ipv6 java jpeg kde lcms mikmod mmx motif mozilla mpeg ncurses oggvorbis opengl pam pdflib perl png python qt qtmt quicktime readline sdl spell sse ssl svga tcltk tcpd tiff truetype wmf X xml xml2 xmms xv" COMPILER="gcc3" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -mmmx -m3dnow -msse" CXXFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O3 -pipe -mmmx -m3dnow -msse" ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" MAKEOPTS="-j2" AUTOCLEAN="yes" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" FEATURES="sandbox ccache"

Does /dev/sound/dsp exist on your machine? Which output plugin are you using? If you re-emerge r20 does it still work?

Most odd. I can't reproduce this. I've checked with a couple of people running 2.5.69 and they don't seem to have this problem. In the alsa output plugin configuration do you have a user defined setting for the Audio device? If so, what is it? Only other thing i can think of is that you may have some oddness in your /dev dir. Can you attached the output of 'ls -la /dev/dsp*' to this bug?

/dev/dsp is a sym link, it has the correct owner/permissions. Are you running xmms from the command line? Does it output anything?
no extra output at all if I start it via console...but. how stupid.. I forgot that I patched my kernel with the BK2 patchset, but the compiled kernel gave me problems with ... you already guessed ... sound. sound didn't work in any app other then mpg123, mplayer gmplayer xmms all of them gave me an error about dsp being not available or something like that. during 2.5.68 through 2.5.70 there was a huge change in the devfs which gave all kinds of troubles with /dev and permissions. I booted back to 2.5.69 but still use the 2.5.69-bk2 dir for modules etc. so I guess you can't help me untill 2.5.70 which will come monday (they are on bk12 rightnow) I'll reply again when 2.5.70 is released
Sounds good. I'm going to close this, re-open if there are still issues when sound works again ;-)
