Same problem as http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=113685 ( x-server whith fglrx hangs on exit from X ) with:

Linux bn-00 2.6.23-gentoo-r8 #1 SMP Sun Feb 24 20:53:05 MSK 2008 x86_64 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3000+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

Try your luck w/ ATI/AMD. We can't fix binary blobs.

Try turning off /etc/init.d/atieventsd if you have it started... with 8.1 that solved my lockup on exit problems...
