Description Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-23 07:53:37 UTC
Gentoo Foundation
Funding Request

Requesters:
Mike Doty (kingtaco) on behalf of the AMD64 team.

Priority: Urgent, High, Medium or Low (select one)
	Urgent

Amount requested: This must be in U.S. dollars.
	$325 USD

Funding type and duration:
	One-time

Funding disbursement:
	Either

Problem solved:
Replace old and full discs in pitr.amd64.dev.gentoo.org
    Upgrade to 4G of memory

Justification:
pitr's system disk has over twenty-one thousand run hours(21356) and is showing S.M.A.R.T errors. MTBF is reported as 600000 Hours. It is also causing system instability. Attached you'll find the smart report. In order for pitr to continute to provide dev-box usage for gentoo and upstream developers, it also acts as a gateway for an internal gentoo dev-box network. Boxes like dustpuppy reside on it to save OSL dev space.

I'd also like to upgrade pitr's memory to be able to support more users on the system. The system is memory bound more than anything, upgrading the memory from 2G to 4G will provide for more simultaneous tasks. pitr also participates in the pitr/dustpuppy/poseidon distcc cluster, as well as provides a DHCP/DNS/tftp/nfs server for the gentoo private gigE switch.

Itemized expense list:

        # Money Item
	------------------------------------------------------------------------

Supporting information:
Eight 256M DDR266 ECC/REG modules can be donated to another dev machine or the OSL.

Also, it's $10.02 for "Fedex Express Saver" shipping to OSL.

I'm ok with this. Have you verified whether the motherboard will handle the faster memory?

poseidon.amd64.dev(releng box) uses the DDR333 512M sticks, so I think it's OK.

oh, and poseidon and pitr have identical motherboards
Comment 6 Paul de Vrieze (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-23 21:45:00 UTC
I'm sorry, I meant to ask whether it will make use of it. It can always use it at a lower speed.

Oh. The board and CPUs are 333Mhz capable. Is that what you're trying to ask?
Comment 8 Paul de Vrieze (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-24 04:58:12 UTC
Yes. Of course even if they weren't it might not be possible (or cheaper) to get the slower modules.
Comment 9 Grant Goodyear (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-25 17:16:41 UTC
I need an shipping address, and then I'll place the order.
Comment 10 Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-25 17:38:15 UTC

Newegg won't let me use our paypal account to ship to OSL (because
OSL isn't a "confirmed" address). Somebody want to pay by credit
card, and I'll paypal a reimbursement? (I can do it, if need be,
but not today. Using a credit card involves calling the card's
customer service and having OSL's shipping address added to the
account so that newegg can verify the shipping address, and I
don't have time to do that today.)

Sadly, I'm in the same boat. The last time I tried tried to have something shipped to OSL I had to jump through a bunch of hoops with my CC provider. You should add OSL as a confirmed address, it's likely that you'll be shipping stuff to them in the future....

Comment 15 Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-27 21:44:16 UTC
Grant,

Were you able to add OSLs shipping address to either paypal or the CC approved receivers lists?
Comment 16 Mike Doty (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-29 21:40:47 UTC
Please find a way to get this done. It's reallllly urgent...
Comment 17 Ferris McCormick (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-02-29 21:48:43 UTC
Grant,
What's the status of this? You have the details, and we need to get it done Monday. Please help --- I'm just coming on board and am not sure what to do. So I'm kind of lost at the moment, but we need this done by Monday.
Comment 18 Ferris McCormick (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-03-02 17:12:40 UTC
I'm trying to give this address to NewEgg, but no matter what I do, they don't like it, I think. I'm probably going to need a real telephone number for them. One problem is that they do not generate mailing labels the same way credit cards do, so if I give them something they like (Company/Address), credit cards don't.

They think it becomes
Jeff Sheltren
OSU ...
Kerr ...

Credit cards think it becomes
Jeff Sheltren / OSU ...
...
which is too long

If I give New Egg
Jeff Sheltren

OSU ...
Kerr ...

They think this is OSU ... B210
which is too long.

And I think they are trying to match my phone number with Oregon, which will not work. We'll see ... I have ordered it, but I expect NewEgg to bounce it.

I have OSU shipping addr authorized on two different credit cards in two different ways, but NewEgg is being a real pain.

NewEgg's reply to the order

The credit card has paid for the order, but it might ship thus:

Jeff Sheltren
OSU Open Source Lab
Corvallis
Oregon 97331

without the Kerr Admin part (because NewEgg can't generate two address lines, I guess.)

I am attaching the emails; I suggest you let OSU OSL know what is going on.

Verification that NewEgg has accepted payment

This shows that the disk has been paid for and will be sent. I leave it to you and to OSU OSL to figure out how to make sure the shipping address will get it there. I don't know if OSU Open Source Lab will be enough for UPS or now; once I have a tracking number, I'll pass it on and you can fix it with UPS if necessary.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but NewEgg and the credit card holders are incompatible when adding an alternate shipping address.

I am finished with this, and will need reimbursed. (Memory is out of stock, as I said.)
Comment 21 Ferris McCormick (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-03-03 13:54:18 UTC
This has shipped and the tracking number is:
1ZW098R40200978303
It is scheduled for delivery on Wednesday, 5 March.

I STRONGLY suggest that either you or Jeff contact UPS directly about the shipping address to see if it is adequate. If not, you can give them the building address as well. To quote NewEgg:
================================

Dial 1-800-782-7892 or visit www.ups.com to track your package. If you have any questions or concerns while your order is in transit, please contact UPS directly for inquiries.
Comment 22 Ferris McCormick (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-03-06 23:50:10 UTC
The disk has been delivered, and Mike is willing to close this bug and open a new one when the memory is back in stock. I am holding it open, however, as a reminder that I am awaiting reimbursement. (Roughly $96; the attachments show the exact amount.)
Comment 23 Joshua Jackson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-03-10 20:44:23 UTC
fmccor has been reimbursed for the purchase of the hard drive. Thank you for your assistance in this and patience in being reimbursed.
Comment 24 Ferris McCormick (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-03-10 20:50:10 UTC
Thank you. Now closing, as per Mike's request. Please file a new bug or request funding in whatever way is appropriate when the memory is available.
