The manual kernel generation mentions moving the kernel image to the boot directory, but nothing about the initrd image (nor how to make it). The genkernel section does mention it. The section on grub describes the initrd image for genkernel users, but not for manual users. It's possible that I compiled something out of the kernel that should pervent this, but the error is "Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel."
