If I start ooffice with a non existing ~/.ooo-2.0 it hangs already after answering al registration questions pressing the "Finish" button. Then I kill ooffice and all realted processes. After that I can start e.g. oocalc and the working window pops up. Sometimes Openoffice hangs already here or at least hangs if I press tools -> options -> security -> "Macro Security ..." That's a really annoying situation. The problem for me is especially the missing error message. It's also very strange that there is no load produced by the openoffice app during the lock. I found a bug on debian which seams to be related to my problem: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=464507 I didn't get the error messages on console he describes in his report. strace didn't give any further (for me interpretable) info ... Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. start oocalc 2. goto tools -> options -> security 3. press "Macro Security ..." button Actual Results: openoffice hangs and do not respond. If I resize the window the content isn't rerendered. There is no cpu load. Do you get any output in a console when run from there. Also: What happens if you try to change the java-settings?
There are no outputs in the console, no error and no cpu load. What do you mean by java-settings? I have set the VM to mueli@michael:~$ sudo eselect java-vm list Available Java Virtual Machines: [1] blackdown-jdk-1.4.2 [2] blackdown-jre-1.4.2 [3] emul-linux-x86-java-1.5 [4] emul-linux-x86-java-1.6 [5] ibm-jdk-bin-1.5 [6] sun-jdk-1.5 [7] sun-jdk-1.6 system-vm [8] sun-jre-bin-1.5 [9] sun-jre-bin-1.6 and the problem also occurs with the following settings: mueli@michael ~ $ sudo eselect java-vm set system 4 mueli@michael ~ $ sudo eselect java-vm set system 3 mueli@michael ~ $ sudo eselect java-vm set system 9 mueli@michael ~ $ sudo eselect java-vm set system 8 What I have now done is to strace the child processes and the most promising output to find a clue for the porblem was this: [...] mmap2(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0x1000) = 0xfffffffff5001000 read(35, 0xff908a68, 8192) = -1 EISDIR (Is a directory) close(35) = 0 munmap(0xf5001000, 4096) = 0 gettimeofday({1204537807, 751216}, NULL) = 0 pipe([35, 36]) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGCHLD, {SIG_DFL}, {SIG_DFL}, 8) = 0 rt_sigaction(SIGPIPE, {SIG_IGN}, {SIG_IGN}, 8) = 0 clone(child_stack=0, flags=CLONE_CHILD_CLEARTID|CLONE_CHILD_SETTID|SIGCHLD, child_tidptr=0) = 31822 futex(0xf6d7a120, FUTEX_WAKE, 1) = 1 rt_sigaction(SIGPIPE, {SIG_IGN}, NULL, 8) = 0 close(36) = 0 fcntl64(35, F_GETFL) = 0 (flags O_RDONLY) fstat64(0x23, 0xff90a96c) = 0 mmap2(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0x1000) = 0xfffffffff5001000 _llseek(35, 0, 0xff90a9c4, SEEK_CUR) = -1 ESPIPE (Illegal seek) read(35, obviously lseek() fails. But for me - that doesn't get me further ;) g, Mueli
(In reply to comment #2) > > What do you mean by java-settings? I have set the VM to > Actually I was refering to the java-settings in OOo itself: Check Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Java
Hmm - as soon as I try to klick on Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Java ooffice hangs ;) But what I see is, that there are no JREs available in the list. Should there be an entry?
(In reply to comment #4) > Hmm - as soon as I try to klick on Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Java > ooffice hangs ;) But what I see is, that there are no JREs available in the > list. Should there be an entry? > If you have one installed, there should be ;) But this shows that it seems to be a java-relate issue. Did you emerge openoffice-bin with or without java-use-flag? If the first one is true you might try to emerge it again with USE="-java" and see if that helps
@Andreas JFYI, wrt the empty JRE list on Tools > Options > OpenOffice.org > Java. With 2.4rc I have to copy sunjavapluginrc file to .../program/ directory so that the installed JREs are found again. See: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-4821506.html#4821506 May be that is also for 2.3.x, vanilla, too? ebuild code: cp ${S}/build/${SRC}/solver/*/*/lib/sunjavapluginrc \ ${D}/usr/$(get_libdir)/openoffice/program/ \ || die "java plugin config not found!"

Works fine here with 2.4rc2 without copying that file. Also we are talking about openoffice-bin here, so I guess at least here this shouldn't be the issue ;) Still: Will take another look at that, thanks for pointing it out...
@Hanno: thanks for the advice but as Andreas already said - we are talking about openoffice-bin. @Andreas: Can I assist you in any way to apply the advice of Hanno on the binary version? I've tried USE="-java" but it didn't help either. Do you have any further ideas - I am still willing to help to investigate the problem. g, Mueli
I've tried the problem on other amd64 installations but couldn't reproduce it - therefore I'd say the problem resists somewhere in my personal profile and I can not demand the fix of the devs if they aren't able to reproduce the problem. I'll simply clean the broken installation on the affected machine and reinstall the environment because the problem didn't occur on fresh installations. Therefore I will close the bug. But thx so far for your help!
