Description Richard Scott 2008-02-15 10:19:03 UTC
Hi,

Something has changed in gentoo-sources between 2.6.23-r6 and 2.6.23-r8 and this is causing the madwifi-ng modules cause a system to hang at boot time.

This has happened before on previous kernel versions, so you may be able to look back at other madwifi-ng bugs to see what the fix was.

I'm currently using madwifi-ng-0.9.3.3 and the last time this happened downgrading it to madwifi-ng-0.9.3.1 worked. I'll try that soon but I'm currently not in front of that machine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. emerge =net-wireless/madwifi-ng-0.9.3.3 =net-wireless/madwifi-ng-tools-0.9.3.3
2. try and boot a gentoo-2.6.23-r8 kernel

Actual Results:
The system hangs at INIT: Entering runlevel: 3

Expected Results:
The system to boot fully.

You could try 0.9.4 as well... Also, dmesg output would help.

madwifi-ng 0.9.4 works ok :-)

ok, madwifi-ng(-tools)-0.9.3.3 is now working with the 2.6.23-r8 kernel!

I've no idea how I fixed it tho as I've not really tried very hard :-(

Before I'd not setup my package.keywords correctly last time I posted to this bug report when I said it worked with 0.9.4. I've found out that I'd just re-installed 0.9.3.3 rather than upgrading to 0.9.4.

It's funny, cos I have a wrapper script around genkernel that runs module-rebuild so I know the madwifi code was rebuilt after the kernel upgrade.

All very strange, but thanks for your help and please consider this bug "invalid" ;-(
