Hi, I would call myself a normal desktop user, and I just want my system to add all useflags necessary for, say, 99% of the desktop work/fun I use. Until now this meant, adding a ton use useflags, and regularly checking if there are new ones my desktop needs to fulfill my needs (for example a new video codec, or a new instant messenger protocol, or just plain logging for my kopete). So I thought a "rich media desktop" would be nice. This should contain all useflags which might be needed for desktop useage. For example, my useflags include: 3ds X a52 aac accessibility acl acpi addbookmarks akode alias alsa amarok amd64 amuled arts autoreplace avi bash-completion berkdb bitmap-fonts bittorrent blas bzip2 cairo cal3d cdr clamav cli clucene connectionstatus contactnotes cracklib crypt css cups curl dbus decibel divx4linux djvu dri dv dvd dvdr dvdread dvdrip eds elisp emacs emboss encode esd evo examples fam fame firefox flac foomatic fortran gadu gcj gdbm gif gpgme gphoto2 gpm groupwise gstreamer hal highlight history iconv idn ieee1394 imagemagick imlib ipod ipv6 irc isdnlog jabber jingle jpeg kde kerberos kig-scripting lapack latex ldap libcaca lm_sensors mad matroska mbrola metalink midi mikmod mmx mng mod mp3 mpeg mplayer mudflap musicbrainz ncurses netmeeting nls nptl nptlonly nsplugin ocaml ogg oggvorbis openbabel opengl openmp openxr oss pam pcre pdf perl png portaudio ppds pppd python qca qt3 qt3support qt4 quicktime readline reflection regex sametime sasl scanner sdl sensord session shorten skey snmp spamassassin speex spell spl sqlite sqlite3 sse sse2 ssl statistics strigi subtitles svg symlink taglib tcl tcpd theora threads tiff timidity tk translator truetype truetype-fonts tunepimp type1-fonts ucs2 unicode usb vnc vorbis wavpack x264 xine xml xorg xscreensaver xv xvid yahoo zeroconf zlib There will be a difference between kde and gnome users (kde users might want "kde, qt, -gtk, -gnome", gnome users rather "gnome, gtk, -kde, -qt"), and maybe xfce. But the main usecase should be "I want a desktop system which does all those little desktop things I want, multimedia, chatting, python scripting in blender, ...." This would be the profile for those who don't want to worry themselves, if they have the correct media codec installed. They just want it pulled in automatically, so they can worry about other things. I'd be a user of the profile at once! What do you think? Reproducible: Always
If you're still not happy with the current profiles, please start a thread in the gentoo-dev mailing list about creating such a profile.
