Description Carlos Eduardo Santos 2008-02-08 03:20:58 UTC
Shorewall complains about inserting nf_conntrack_amanda. Maybe it's a kernel bug because of:
# uname -r
2.6.23-gentoo-r6
ca ~ # locate amanda | grep modules/2.6.23
/lib/modules/2.6.23-gentoo-r6/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/nf_nat_amanda.ko

nf_nat_amanda: Unknown symbol nf_nat_amanda_hook

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Compile amanda stuff as modules
2.Start shorewall or modprobe amanda modules

Please attach full dmesg output from after seeing such errors. The first error is the one that is important, and I think the one you pasted is not the first. Your shorewall errors indicate that nf_conntrack_amanda is the first module that fails, so I would expect the first error to be of format "nf_conntrack_amanda: Unknown symbol FOO"
Comment 4 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2008-03-10 17:54:42 UTC
any progress on the request from comment #3?
Comment 5 Carlos Eduardo Santos 2008-03-14 23:34:56 UTC
Testing 2.6.24-r3:
~ # modprobe nf_nat_amanda
WARNING: Error inserting nf_conntrack_amanda (/lib/modules/2.6.24-gentoo-r3/kernel/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_amanda.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
FATAL: Error inserting nf_nat_amanda (/lib/modules/2.6.24-gentoo-r3/kernel/net/ipv4/netfilter/nf_nat_amanda.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

In dmesg, I see:
nf_nat_amanda: Unknown symbol nf_nat_amanda_hook

I'd still like to see this, please
Comment 7 Carlos Eduardo Santos 2008-03-15 14:36:32 UTC
Ok, if you insist, I've just attached dmesg output and config 2.6.24-r3

New kernel
Comment 10 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-03-18 10:44:02 UTC
Strange. How about you do this:

From a clean boot, without any init scripts trying to load those modules, just run the following single command:

# modprobe nf_conntrack_amanda

I expect it will fail with the same error message on the console. But the interesting part will be looking in dmesg - do any errors appear at all? I suspect not - but that's the interesting part.
Comment 11 Carlos Eduardo Santos 2008-03-23 01:39:27 UTC
# modprobe nf_conntrack_amanda; dmesg >dmesg.out
FATAL: Error inserting nf_conntrack_amanda (/lib/modules/2.6.24-gentoo-r3/kernel/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_amanda.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

I'll attach dmesg.out now

dmesg when loading nf_conntrack_amanda just after booting

shorewall was disabled so this is the first time nf_conntrack_amanda was loaded.

You guessed right. The errors appear in dmesg only when loading nf_nat_amanda.
Comment 14 Daniel Drake (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2008-06-07 16:53:39 UTC
Do you still encounter this problem on 2.6.25?

If so, could you try using insmod to load nf_conntrack_amanda? You will need the full absolute path to that module, which you can find within the "modprobe -l" output. Please also examine dmesg after trying. Let's see what happens then...
Comment 15 Mike Pagano gentoo-dev 2008-07-05 20:20:09 UTC
Feel free to reopen once you've had the chance to perform the operations outlined in comment #14.
Comment 16 Carlos Eduardo Santos 2008-07-06 22:20:05 UTC
I'm not compiling that module anymore, so shorewall doesn't load it and no errors are displayed. I hope I won't need to use amanda.

Thank you
