The new ebuild for Python breaks Portage because of a missing dependency: the  
Python module fchksum. Without it, emerge and ebuild both sputter and die 
before doing anything that could fix themselves. The workaround is to download 
the source from http://www.azstarnet.com/~donut/programs/fchksum.html and to 
compile and install manually.
