Description Martin Mokrejš 2008-02-06 12:34:27 UTC
a long time ago to change an IP address of say eth0 device I was instructed
to pause network device, edit config file and issue 'rc' command to resume all network service. This approach was preferrable to doing net.eth0 stop and start.
Recently, started to kill my xdm session. It is either because I have I think added syndaemon for my synaptics touchpad to my default runlevel or because something in besalayout or network scipt handling changed.

The following I have axquired from console mode while at the moment no xdm session was running. Basically I just want to show that X is being accessed and that maybe really syndaemon is this cause killing X.

I might be wrong but I think this started to appear around the time when net.eth0 pause & rc started to restart openvpn.* tunnels during the procedure as well (which did not happen before).

Remove syndaemon from any runlevel and never put it back. It won't *ever* work from any initscript, it's completely wrong place to start this thing. See Bug 37767.
Comment 2 Martin Mokrejš 2008-02-06 13:30:33 UTC
OK, I have removed syndaemon from 'default' runlevel, all in my case. Then made sure no syndaemon process was running, did net.eth0 pause & rc, and still the rc command killed my current xdm session.

This got fixed in recent baselayout-1 series, cannot say exact version number.
baselayout-2.0.0 does not support the restart argument. :( will have to file another bug report on that.
