Description Adam Bellinson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2002-04-24 22:12:44 UTC
[kernel messages] Warning: unable to open an initial console *REBOOT!* The ONLY kernel out of the many that I've tried compiling that doesn't do this is 2.4.19-r1 from the 1.1a boot cd. It seems all that's left to do is activate the swap, then it gives me the login. I've tried 2.4.18 in its vanilla form as well as 2.4.19 patched and configured EXACTLY as the one from the cd.

Weird.

Hmm, I have a SIS630 box at work, and it (DRI included) works just fine.

I had tar'd up my / from my functional system on my box, and shipped it over to my brother's box, where it didn't work right. I finally got fed up and decided to try installing gentoo the "right way." This worked. I wouldn't have even bothered posting this bug in the first place except one kernel I had (from the 1.1a cd) DID boot correctly. I still don't know what the problem was, exactly, but I'm not sure it matters at this point. My brother's fresh gentoo install is up and running.
