The apache/mod_php combination seems to crash when generating png images under
mod_php and libgd per the above url if linked to the current pdflib 4.0.1.
Requiring the latest 4.0.3 somewhere in there would alleviate this
hard-to-diagnose problem.

Fixed in the upcoming PHP eclass.
